What is mode 3?
Electric vehicle charging must take place under suitable control and safety conditions. TheIEC 61851-1 standard defines mode 3 charging as the connection of the electric vehicle (EV) to the AC network using dedicated electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE), which is permanently connected to the mains alternating current power supply. This charge mode includes a control circuit between the EVSE and the electric vehicle, to perform communication and charge control functions.
The EVSE charging equipment, in charge mode 3, has the following features:
● Verification that the vehicle is connected correctly.
● System activation. Only allows the connection of the power supply voltage when the control function between the charging equipment (EVSE) and the electric vehicle is correctly established.
● Control for disconnection of the EV power supply voltage.
● Continuous check of ground conductor continuity between the charging equipment (EVSE) and the electric vehicle.
There are also other optional functions:
● EV charge current selection.
● Mechanical locking and unlocking of the connector.
● Detection and real time adjustment of the power available from the power supply system.
● Verification of the maximum permissible current for the connection cable used.
● Calculation of ventilation requirements for the charge area.
